ABSTRACT

The Sandwich Generation in Baragay Bonot, Legazpi City are mostly women who are eager to provide for the needs of their elderly while supporting their own family. This investigation examines how norms of filial responsibility influence adult children to provide social support to their aging parents. It specifically answered the following questions: a.) What are the roles of the Sandwich Generation to their aging parents?, b.) The problem that affects the quality care of the care providers who are the sandwich generation is the declining health status of either parents ,it thus increases the necessity to provide them support The filial obligation is stronger among daughters than among sons but only towards the surviving parent In the Philippines there is a trend of feminization of society where the females outlive the males, That is why the daughters take good care of a surviving parent often the female or their mothers. The study utilized the qualitative method of research. The primary sources of data were the daughters, but the data were also validated with their elderly parents. The study focused on the Sandwich Generation. The researchers interviewed the Key Informants with the aid of the interview guide. Interview results were validated through direct observation and interviewers with the Sandwich Generation. In terms of the profile of the respondents, the ages are ranged from 30 - 45 years old and the elderly parents were 65 years old and over. Their monthly income ranged from Php 3000- Php 8000 . It was found out that the problems encountered by the Sandwich Generation were financial and mostly' in terms of emotional support. As they grew older, the elderly parents became more jealous because of the divided attention from their daughter towards their own families, they also had a strong tendency to throw tantrums. The researchers recommended the following: 1.) It is important that the care providers must be updated with knowledge on the care of their elderly parents; 2.) The family must plan for the future in readiness for looking after the elderly by availing themselves of health care insurance with the elderly parents as one of their dependents;3.) It is best that the care providers, who belong to the sandwich generation, allot time for themselves and be able to find ample time to enjoy themselves; 4.) The extensive closeness of the family with their extended families may be utilized to enlist the support systems in the community in the care of elderly parents; and, 5.) An open communication with the other members of the family to allocate quality time for their parents may ease the burden of the pressures of duties by these care providers who belong to the sandwich
generation
