As to educational attainment; there are two or 40% of BHW's are college graduate, two or 40% were college undergraduate and the remaining one or 20% of them was highschool graduate. Concerning the trainings attended, everyone has knowledge and experience because of their long years in the service. Every respondent participates in seminars and trainings like Filariasis, EPI(Expanded program and Immunization), nutrition and Iwas Tigdas. As to the knowledge level of lactating mothers about breastfeeding, most of the respondents know the advantages of breastfeeding for their infants especially during the first 6 months of their life but they lack knowledge on the advantages of breastfeeding to them as a mother. With regards to stoppage of breastfeeding, most of the interviewed lactating mothers agreed with all the identified reasons of the stoppage of breastfeeding. It was shown that lactating mothers lack knowledge in terms of proper way of starting the milk flow and that breast milk alone can satisfy the baby. In bottle feeding (milk formula) majority (26 or 87%) of the mothers answered that bottle feeding can be much inconvenient than breastfeeding. Likewise, once the mother decided not to breastfeed their baby, it is difficult to reverse the decision and begin breastfeeding. This is due to the fact that bottle feeding involves lengthy preparation and the baby may have experience confusion when the mother stops breastfeeding and begin again. Concerning mixed feeding, most of the lactating mothers of Barangay Bafiadero answered yes to the question, "Do you know that if you decide to combine bottle feeding with breastfeeding, you should not introduce bottle feeding during the first six weeks of life?" which has the highest frequency of 21 or 70% and 9 or 30%answeredno. As to the level of performance of the Barangay Health Workerson breastfeeding program, respondents rated them as effective with a descriptive value of "sometimes". As to the factors affecting the breastfeeding compliance, though most of them are housewives still they had a hard time of complying breastfeeding for a reason that they are too busy doing household chores. Based from the findings the following conclusions were derived: Breastfeeding, the most frequent problem of the lactating mothers is their lack of knowledge that women who have had caesarian sections can breastfeed comfortably by using different positions, and the least problem is that they have better knowledge that breast m ilk has the right amount of nutrients for the baby until he or she is four to six months old. Stoppage of Breastfeeding. The study revealed that the reason why lactating mothers are not practicing breastfeeding compliance with their infants is because some mothers have trouble starting the milk flow and breastmilk alone could not satisfy the baby, while majority of lactating mothers who are under medical treatment complies breastfeeding. Bottle feeding. Study revealed that majority of the lactating mothers claimed that bottle feeding is more inconvenient than breastfeeding and once you have decided to breastfeed your baby, it is difficult to reverse the decision and begin breastfeeding, while least of the respondents doesn't know that the nutritional contents of milk formula depend on proper nutrition. Mixed feeding. Study shows that majority of the lactating mothers both knows that if you decide to combine bottle feeding with breastfeeding, you should not introduce bottle feeding during the first six weeks of life and the difference between nipples can confuse the baby, causing feeding problems, and interfering with the establishment of breastfeeding. In light of the findings of the study, the following are recommended, It is important that Barangay administrators should be adept in the breastfeeding compliance and this consist mainly in following up lactating mothers (to check whether they are practicing breastfeeding compliance as prescribed). Information, education and communication (IEC) campaign should be intensified to focus more on knowledge and behavioral change considering the increasing needs of the time. Based on the conclusion, the lactating mothers already have a high level of knowledge concerning breastfeeding, but they are still exposed to certain health risks. Moreover, education on breastfeeding compliance has to go hand in hand with physically safe and well-kept facilities to make the barangay a safer place for lactating mothers' development. It may also be helpful if some breastfeeding items for additional information are available at the barangay health center, such as leaflets, flyers, or coupons. Lactating Mothers, To encourage individuals and families to adopt breastfeeding compliance, you should have a good knowledge about breastfeeding and favorable breastfeeding practices so that you can share correct information. Do not give too much information at one time and give only the most important messages. This will prevent confusion and help individuals remember and focus their attention on the message that you are giving. Give practical advice and do not give suggestions that are too difficult, time consuming or expensive for the family. Find interesting ways of sharing information with individuals and groups. Barangay Health Workers can conduct studies, seminars or researches about breastfeeding compliance in collaboration with government agencies and local institutes. There is a need for a strict enforcement, including regular home visiting services, referral, follow up and outreach programs for the lactating mothers. |
