Target audience note ABSTRACT

Single parents either a male or female, are a special population of students who need to be advised differently from the traditional students. This has been reported that single parents are having problems such as financial problem, accumulation in social roles and emotional situation (COEIA, 2011). In order to fully understand the challenges and barriers faced by single parents it is important to realize their motivation to pursue education in spite of these challenges. This study, through in-depth interviews, explored the experiences and related issues of single-parent nursing students and their coping strategies, so that recommendations may be made to enhance their abilities to adapt to the demands of obtaining a nursing degree while raising a family on their own.

This study assessed the coping strategies of single parents. It sought to answer the following questions: 1) What is the demographic profile of the participants in terms age, age of children and number of children? 2) What are the problems encountered by the participants who are pursuing their education and at the same time raising their child alone? 3) What strategies used by the participants to cope with their financial, social and emotional needs?

The research was anchored on Dorothea Orem's Theory on Self-Care Deficit and Betty Neumann's Health Care System Model and utilized descriptive qualitative approach involving three (3) participants who are presently enrolled in the College of Nursing of Aquinas University of
Legazpi SY 2011-2012. Data gathered from a series of in-depth interviews using an interview guide were transcribed, categorized and coded as part of the analytical process. In line with the Aquinas University research agenda of protecting vulnerable groups, this study was conducted to enhance the abilities of single parent nursing students of this university to better adapt to problems encountered as a consequence of single parenthood.

The lifestyle of single parents can be strenuous on their part. The idea that the single parents must take care of thier child while studying or working to sustain the children's needs drains the physical, mental and emotional capabilities.
