| General note | ABSTRACT ROSANA, DIONISIO F. “ THE INVESTMENT PROSPECTS OF MATHEMATICS/ SCIENCE REVIEW CENTERS IN LEGAZPI CITY AND DARAGA ,ALBAY’ ( Unpublished Dissertation, Aquinas University of Legazpi, Rawis, Legazpi City, March 2001). This study determined the status and investment prospects of the mathematics and Science Review Center in Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay to elicit benchmark information for business planning. Specifically, it sought answers to the following problems: 1. What is the status of mathematics/Science Review centers in the City of Legazpi and Daraga, Albay in terms of a a) enrollment, b) faculty c) service and facilities? 2. What is the perception of the reviewees and parents on the viability of the Mathematics/ Science Review centers in Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay along: a) economic viability, b) technical viability c) social viability? 3. What are the financial prospects of mathematics/Science Review Centers in the next five years in terms of a a) return, of investment, b) profitability, c) liquidity do payback? 4. What business plan can be prepared to make mathematics and science Review center in Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay efficiency operational? The study has arrived at the following findings based on the data gathered. 1. Status of the mathematics/ Science Review centers of Legazpi City and Daraga Albay The status of the Mathematics/ Science Review Centers of Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay shows that their total enrollees range from 35 students to 398. A conservative number of 40 students per review class is a realistic estimate. The faculty members who are mostly the owners of the review centers are educationally qualified with more than ten years of teaching experience. The existing facilities and services of the review centers are still traditional, and inadequate Instructional materials like library facilities, Laboratory apparatus, projectors ,film slides, transparencies, recorders and tapes which the teacher needs for effective teaching are mostly not available. 2. Perceptions of reviewers and parents on the viability of Mathematics and Science review Center in Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay The parents and reviewees strongly agreed that there exist a high demand for mathematics/science review centers in Legazpi City and Daraga Albay and that the present review centers are inadequate to meet this demand. They also agreed that students are willing to pay reasonable tuition fees to enroll in a Mathematics/ Science Review Center. These are indications of economic viability of investing in a review center. As to technical viability of a review center, the parents and the reviewees strongly agreed that there exist qualified and experienced faculty members who can teach in the review centers and that Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay are strategic locations for a review center since these places are easily accessible to transportation facilities. A mathematics/science review center in Legazpi City and Daraga Albay of perceived by the parents and reviewees as socially viable since they strongly agree that functionally literate student in mathematics and sciences are productive members of the society and that a science oriented citizenry are assets to national building. They also agreed that mathematics review center in Legazpi City and Daraga Albay will improve the academic achievement of the students. 3. Financial Prospects of Investing in Mathematics/Science Review centers in Legazpi City and Daraga Albay. Based on a projected balance Sheet and Income Statement for a five-year period, the projected return on investment (ROI) ranges a low of 11.93% during the first year of operation to a high of 130.163% on the fifth year of operation. This is a higher ROI than the banking Standard of 7.5 % rate of interest for the time deposit of an amount not less than P100, 000. The financial indicators revealed an increasing profitability ratio of 11.48 % during the first year of operation to 49.52 during the fifth year of its operation. This is a favorable financial prospect considering that money invested in commercial banks command a much lower rate of interest. The projected liquidity ratio revealed an increasing liquidity of fifty-seven pesos worth of current assets as against one hundred pesos worth of current liabilities during the first year of operation to one-hundred sixty pesos worth of current assets as against one hundred pesos worth of current liabilities on the fifth year of operation. This is indicative of an increasing capability of the view centers to meet its maturing on time. The computed payback for investing in a mathematics review center in Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay is one year and more or less three months. This means that initial investment in a review center will be immediately recovered in only a span of one year and three months. By industry standard of not more than three-year investment recovery period, this payback is highly favorable. 4. Business Plan for a mathematics/Science review center in Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay. Investment in any business venture requires the preparation and implementation of a well-drafted business plan to assure the investor that the set and objectives of such business venture is efficiently realized. The Business plan for Mathematics/Science Review center in Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay included a specific-focus plan on marketing, production, financial and organization. Also included are steps of carrying out the plan or the stages of activities to be undertaken to achieve the objectives of favorable investment opportunities. Based from the findings of this study, the following conclusions are drawn: 1. That there is a commercial number of students who are willing to enroll in a mathematics/ Science Review Center in Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay. There exist qualified and experienced faculty members but the facilities and services are traditional, inadequate, need expansion and improvements. 2. That investment in a Mathematics/ Science review center in Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay is Economically, Technically and socially viable assuring favorable return on investment and productive contribution to society. 3. That there exist favorable financial prospects of investing in a Mathematics? Science review center in Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay in terms of immediate recovery of the initial investment and the prospect of higher rate of return. 4. That the existence of a Business plan assures the realization of a favorable investment climate in the most efficient manner. Based from the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations are specifically addressed to prospective investors: 1. Prospective investors may adopt, modify, restructure or validate the financial projections and analysis of this study that would suit the need for the establishment of a mathematics/science Review center in Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay. 2. Interested investors who are in need of additional funds for investment in a review Center could source out from non-traditional financial since these agencies may have financial assistance programs that are not being tapped by would- be entrepreneurs. The following areas from further study are also recommended: 1. A research on the socio-economic impact of Mathematics/Science Review centers in the Bicol region. 2. Academic performance of reviewees in Mathematics/Science Review Centers in the Bicol Region. 3. Financial status of Mathematics/Science Review centers in the Bicol Region. 4. Demand and supply of mathematics and science teachers in the Bicol Region 5. The investment prospects of Professional Review center in the Bicol Region. |
